When Worry Becomes Too Big: Understanding Anxiety in Children and Youth

It’s natural for children and youth to feel worried at times. New experiences, starting school, trying something unfamiliar, or spending time away from home can bring up nervousness. In many cases, this kind of worry is helpful. It supports learning, awareness, and growth.

But sometimes, worry begins to take up more space than it should.

When anxious thoughts become persistent, begin to affect sleep, interfere with school, or limit a child’s ability to enjoy everyday life, it may be a sign that additional support is needed. At Midnight Sun Wellness Holistic Psychology, we work alongside families to gently support children in understanding their emotions and building a sense of safety and confidence within themselves.

How Anxiety Can Show Up

Children and youth do not always have the language to say “I feel anxious.” Instead, anxiety often appears through behaviours, physical symptoms, or changes in mood.

You may notice:

  • Difficulty focusing or appearing constantly “on edge”
  • Changes in sleep, including trouble falling asleep or frequent waking
  • Recurring stomach aches or headaches without a clear medical cause
  • Increased irritability, emotional outbursts, or tearfulness
  • Strong attachment to caregivers or difficulty separating
  • Avoidance of activities they previously enjoyed

These patterns are not signs of bad behaviour. They are often signals that a child is feeling overwhelmed internally.

Understanding Where Anxiety Comes From

Anxiety rarely has a single cause. It often develops through a combination of factors, including temperament, life experiences, and environmental stressors.

Common contributing factors may include:

  • Transitions such as moving or changing schools
  • Social challenges, including peer conflict or bullying
  • Family stress or changes within the home
  • A natural sensitivity to new or uncertain situations

While anxiety can feel overwhelming, it is also highly responsive to the right kind of support. With care and guidance, children can learn to move through anxious feelings rather than feel controlled by them.

When to Reach Out for Support

Parents and caregivers often sense when something has shifted.

It may be helpful to seek additional support if:

  • Worry is becoming more intense or frequent over time
  • Anxiety is impacting school, friendships, or daily routines
  • Your child is avoiding important or meaningful activities
  • Concerns have been raised by teachers, coaches, or caregivers
  • Anxiety is affecting the overall wellbeing of your family

Early support does not mean something is “wrong.” It means your child is being supported in learning skills that will serve them throughout their life.

A Gentle Path Forward

When children are given space to understand their emotions and tools to navigate them they begin to feel more capable and secure.

Therapeutic support can help children:

  • Recognize and name their feelings
  • Develop coping strategies that feel manageable and age-appropriate
  • Build confidence in facing challenges
  • Strengthen their sense of safety, both internally and in their relationships
