Solution Focused Therapy, also called Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), is an approach that focuses on the solutions available rather than the problems bringing the client into therapy.
SFT does this by focusing on the future and working to create attainable and realistic goals and thus it is a good option for clients who can only attend a small number of sessions or want to focus on improving their immediate situation.
Therapists using SFT seek to, together with the client, explore how their client’s life would be different if the problem(s) were no longer present. Thereafter, therapist and client search through the client’s existing strengths, life experiences, and behaviours to find and explore situations when the client successfully coped with previous challenges. Then client and therapist co-construct a sustainable solution plan comprised of attainable goals.
