ADHD Assessments

Understanding attention, focus, and executive functioning. Many people seek an ADHD assessment after years of wondering why everyday tasks seem more difficult than they should. Perhaps your child is bright and curious but struggles to stay focused, complete homework, or follow instructions. Maybe a teacher has commented that they’re “capable of more.” Or perhaps you’re an adult who has developed countless strategies to stay organized but still feels overwhelmed by work, deadlines, or daily responsibilities. At Midnight Sun Wellness, we provide comprehensive ADHD assessments for children (ages 6+), adolescents, and adults in Sherwood Park, Edmonton, and the surrounding communities.

What it is

What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and executive functioning. It is not caused by laziness, lack of motivation, or poor parenting.
ADHD affects people differently. Some individuals experience primarily inattentive symptoms, while others struggle more with hyperactivity or impulsivity. Many experience a combination of both.
Because ADHD symptoms can overlap with anxiety, learning disabilities, depression, and other concerns, a comprehensive assessment is the best way to determine what is contributing to the challenges you’re experiencing.

When it helps

Signs an ADHD assessment may be helpful

Children and adolescents

An assessment may be appropriate if your child:
·
Has difficulty staying focused or completing schoolwork
·
Frequently loses belongings or forgets instructions
·
Appears restless or constantly “on the go”
·
Struggles with organization or time management
·
Has emotional outbursts or becomes easily frustrated
·
Is consistently described as bright but underperforming academically

Adults

Many adults seek assessment after years of managing challenges on their own. Common concerns include:
·
Difficulty staying organized or meeting deadlines
·
Chronic procrastination
·
Forgetfulness or losing important items
·
Trouble maintaining attention during conversations or meetings
·
Feeling mentally exhausted from constantly trying to stay on top of responsibilities
·
Wondering whether lifelong struggles with attention may be explained by ADHD
Many adults are assessed only after a child or family member receives a diagnosis and they begin recognizing similar patterns in themselves.
Why comprehensive

Difficulty concentrating doesn’t always mean ADHD

Challenges with attention can also be related to a range of other concerns. That’s why we use a comprehensive assessment process rather than relying on a brief screening questionnaire. Our goal is to understand the complete picture so we can identify ADHD when it’s present while also recognizing other factors that may be affecting learning, work, or everyday life.

Our approach

Our assessment approach

Every ADHD assessment is personally completed by Rashmani Chakrabarty, Registered Psychologist.
From the initial interview through testing and the feedback session, you’ll work with the same clinician throughout the process. This continuity provides a deeper understanding of your history and ensures the person explaining your results is the same person who completed the assessment.
Testing is completed over multiple appointments to reduce fatigue and provide the most accurate picture possible.
What we assess

Several important areas of functioning

A comprehensive ADHD assessment looks at several important areas of functioning, including:

Cognitive abilities

Including reasoning, working memory, processing speed, and visual-spatial skills.

Academic achievement

Assessment of reading, writing, spelling, and mathematics to determine whether learning disabilities may also be contributing to difficulties.

Executive functioning

Including attention, planning, organization, impulse control, and task initiation.

Social and emotional functioning

Screening for concerns such as anxiety, mood, and behavioural patterns that may influence attention and daily functioning.
By evaluating these areas together, we can determine whether ADHD is present while identifying any additional strengths or challenges.
The process

Most ADHD assessments involve 3 to 5 appointments over approximately 4 to 6 weeks. Throughout the process, we’ll explain each step, answer your questions, and ensure you understand the results and recommendations.
